Just how much abuse will people take if the promise of rich stock options is held in front of them? Quite a lot, as it turns out. This book tracks the production of Windows NT at Microsoft, following the various staffers as they get put through the pressure of developing a large piece of software. I'm doubtful of the book's technical correctness; it seemed to invariably be wrong where it covered topics I'm familiar with. However, it's an interesting study of Microsoft society; programmers abandoned leisure, family, and sleep. Is it worth it? Not in my opinion; I like to go home at a reasonable hour and have a minimal social life. Well, I like to go home, anyways.
