Achenbach, a staff writer for the Washington Post, takes a gently musing look at the search for aliens and the debates about the likelihood of other life in the universe. This takes him from Carl Sagan to William Hoagland, from the Mars Society in Boulder to Roswell NM and even to the set of The X-Files. It's slightly outdated now -- the first extrasolar planets were being discovered, all gas giants, and now we've found dozens more -- but still an interesting tour of the field, in both its scientific and pseudoscientific aspects.
