Dennett, Daniel C.

Dennett coined the term "intuition pump" for something that helps us reason about a philosophical problem, such as a parable, thought experiment, or logical framework. Dennett presents a bunch of them to illuminate three areas: what "meaning" signifies, the explanatory power of evolution, and the nature of consciousness. His writing is enjoyable and I liked the clever nature of the thought experiments, but they didn't always clarify things for me; for example, the book's discussion of consciousness only gave me the vaguest idea of what compatibilism is.
